Dhurrie is a simple yet beautiful rug that a lot of us have at home or may have come across while shopping for home décor items. Visually pleasing to the eye, and multifunctional, Dhurries are a great way to liven up a space or add a bit of coziness to a place. But before reaching their modern day ornamental appeal, Dhurries were solely used for practical purposes mainly in India. Today they are famous globally and are commonly available almost everywhere.

History & Evolution

The Dhurrie is a flat, woven, no-pile rug traditionally used as a floor covering. It originates from India and surrounding regions.Dhurries are usually made of cotton, wool, silk or jute and sometimes in a combination of different fibers. The Dhurrie was initially used as a utility item, as a bottom layer for bedding and occasionally as a floor covering. Since it was used only for a functional purpose, Dhurries were extremely ordinary, with dull designs and colors that would run. It was only during the late 1940’s that Dhurries saw a transformation from being used for simply functional to more decorative purposes. It was also during this time that weavers started experimenting with more colors, patterns and motifs to create unique and stand out designs.

How to use Dhurries at Home

Dhurries give a sense of warmth and homeliness. Adding a simple dark or light Dhurrie to an otherwise dull or neutral room can really brighten up the space. Moreover, Dhurries are quite lightweightand foldable, so can be easily shifted from one space to another if required. Another unique feature about Dhurries is that, they are reversible. A simple home cleaning tip is to simply flip the Dhurrie over incase one side gets too dirty before throwing it in for a quick wash, (making them low maintenance as well).
