NGO Mijwan welfare society was the initiative of Lt. Kaifi Azmi, revered Urdu poet and father of actress Shabana Azmi. Named after the village, Mijwan in Uttar Pradesh, this NGO was started with the goal of creating employment opportunities women, in need for the same. Another major agenda of this organization was to revive the depleting traditional Indian handicraft – the art of chikankari embroidery. Currently the leading figure of this welfare organization is Shabana Azmi and Naresh Goyal’s daughter Namrata Goyal.
Designer Manish Malhotra’s association with this brand has been from the longest time. He has adopted the Kaifi Azmi chikankari centres in Mijwan, making their hand embroidered chikankari, with his signature touch, gain a global recognition.
In this light Mijwan Fashion Show has been an every year affair. Time and again celebrities of the tinsel town have been seen walking the ramp of Mijwan Fashion Show for the cause of charity. Stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Siddharth Malhotra, etc had previously walked for this fashion show. This year it was Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma who walked for this charity fashion show.
Talking about Manish’s collection for the Mijwan Summer 2017, Shabana Azmi stated in an interview, “Mijwan Summer 2017 is Manish Malholtra at his best… there is a lot of his glamorous stuff that basically has chikankari from Mijwan women and then it has been glamorized by a lot of sequin work because that is the style internationally…” Indeed Malhotra’s signature touch gave these (otherwise undoubtedly beautiful) hand embroidered chikankari a nouveau look altogether, befitting the global fashion world completely.

So while Shahrukh walked the ramp adorning an oh-so-gorgeous black and white embroidered chikankari Galabandh, Anushka wore a modish chikankari lehenga with golden tassel/ sequin work and rocked the ramp! Later in the show, the king of bollywood (looking no less than a badshah itself, in that attire) congratulated Manish Malhotra, Shabana Azmi and her entire team in heartrending words for putting up such a spectacular show and for such a noble cause.

Celebrities attending the show too, mostly wore apparel from Mijwan summer collection 2017 and did not fail to steal the show, too. Celebrities to attend this show included Neetu Singh, Kajol, Diana Penty, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nandita Das, etc.

Indeed initiatives like these make us rethink our responsibilities towards the brilliant artisans of rural India. Congratulations to Mijwan welfare society for living up to the aspirations of its founder. Let me end this article by few lines from one of Kaifi Azmi’s poem itself:
