Review Of The Event ‘Golden Threads Of Assam Presents Samant Chauhan’ (Day 2)

Day two of Amazon India Fashion Week AW’17 reverberated the spirit of day one; the spirit of keeping up with FDCI’s commitment of the ‘Make In India’ campaign.  Out of the array of events of Day 2, Samant Chauhan’s show in association with The Golden Threads of Assam is worth mentioning.

The Golden Threads of Assam is an enterprise to restore the royal Silk of Assam. This native fabric of Assam is depleting in an inexplicable rate due to many external factors. Golden Threads in this light, is an initiative to help the weavers and the ones to foster this fabric through various financial and technological aid. Golden Threads is providing the weavers regular training and workshops regarding silk development. It is also trying to enforce a more regulated and enhanced market such that the Muga silk producers are not exploited. Not only so, the association is also making avenues to increase the value of this silk by promoting it through the works of different designers, such that there is a larger awareness and acceptance of this royal fabric, throughout the nation; a fabric, which is on the verge of its extinction.

In collaboration with this pristine initiative, one of FDCI’s revered designers Samant Chauhan, created a collection with this queen of silk, Muga, for the second day of AIFW AW’17. Chauhan has already worked with this royal fabric and showcased the collection in Shillong with the purpose of promoting awareness regarding preservation of this fabric. His AIFW AW’17 show was another such beautiful attempt of reviving the depleting heritage of Muga. This show that took place on the offsite venue of AIFW’ 17 (National Rail Museum, New Delhi), was alluringly experimental, not only because of the choice of venue, but also because of Chauhan’s perception of Muga, forecasted through his collection. His designs weaved tales of the age of old heritage of Assam, with the golden threads of Muga, showing its voyage through difference in time and space. Chauhan’s collection of this year’s AIFW AW’17, clearly reverberates the message of breaking the shackles of relegating Muga silk to the quintessential ‘Mekhla –Chaddar’ of Assam by showing the diversified opportunities that Muga silk can offer, through his designed apparel.
